Artist's Comments

Made for a very dear friend of mine, Lisa Furukawa. Lisa is a half Japanese, half Scottish musician who went to Scotland this past July to see her family and sing at the Scottish Highland Games. For this event, she asked me to make her a kimono from her Family Tartan.

She ordered the fabric from the official Tartan maker in Scotland, I forget the company, and had it sent to me. I think it's really some of the most beautiful quality fabric I've ever worked with.

I've collected kimono and studied them since I was ten years old so I had a pretty good idea of how to put it together. Very close attention to detail was paid, to make sure the lines of the tartan matched and looked uniform. Machine sewn for the most part, all finishing details, including the blind stitching on the sleeves, and the finishing stitches on the collar and lining were done by hand.

About forty hours total went into this. You can check out Lisa's music at [link] . She's amazing!

Looks great! I don't even want to guess what the cost for the fabric was....I have yet to find affordable tartan.

A lot. I'm really, really happy she didn't tell me what she paid for it until after I'd finished it. It is really expensive. My family comes from an Irish background, with a small bit of Scottish. I've been wanting to get an appropriate Tartan to make something out of but like you, finding it within a decent price range has been difficult to say the least.
